WAVE – GOTIK – TREFFEN 2014 Festival Preview – by Fotini G. aka Malice F.

WAVE – GOTIK – TREFFEN 2014: dark-romantic celebrations every year at Whitsun in Leipzig - Germany

Festival Preview - by Malice F.

The biggest worldwide music -and not only- gothic festival is back for the 23rd consecutive year. There is not a single fan of the new & dark/ EBM/ Industrial/ Gothic scene that hasn’t heard of and furthermore hasn’t dreamt of visiting it, at least once.

From June 6th to 9th, again more than 20,000 Goths from all over the world are expected to come together again in Leipzig to celebrate the Wave-Gotik-Treffen as THE international

gathering of the dark family.

23 years ago, two Gothic people from Leipzig had an unusual idea: They didn’t want to create yet another dark music festival, but rather a supra-regional gathering of like-minded fellows for relaxed meeting, chatting and celebrating. When in 1992 the 1st Wave-Gotik-Treffen took place in 1992 at the edge of Leipzig with about 2,000 visitors and just a handful of bands, it is unlikely that anyone imagined that within a few years the WGT would become the largest meeting of Gothic people in the world, taking possession of a whole city every year at Whitsun.

All over the city there will be about 200 bands performing, projects and single artists covering the whole wide range of Gothic music: from Electro-Pop to Goth-Metal, from EBM to Neofolk, from medieval music to Industrial. Apart from famous bands of the scene, you are invited for new discoveries with several less-known real underground bands or artists from the edge of the Gothic music universe.

The concerts and events take place at more than 30 venues spread throughout Leipzig, for instance in the vaults of the Moritzbastei, in the splendid neo-antique cupola hall of the Volkspalast, in the green round of the open-air Parkbühne, as well as in large concert halls.

The WGT program will also include beautiful classical music again, such as opera, musical, chamber music and Mozart’s requiem as ballet.

From its beginning the Wave-Gotik-Treffen has been much more than a music festival: its guests may step back to the romantic atmosphere of ancient times at the medieval market place at the Pagan Village (Heidnisches Dorf). We will present authors reading and unusual theatre; cinematic performances will take place as well as a big live action role play. People in historic clothing will gather in the park for a Victorian Picnic.

For four days a large hall at the AGRA -Messepark will be transformed into the biggest Gothic-wares marketplace in the world. In numerous clubs DJs from all over the world will invite you to dance until dawn.

There will also be a large fetish party where entrance is only possible by following a strict voluptuous dress code. A stroll through the winding passages of city centre of Leipzig with its historical buildings of the Renaissance, Baroque and Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) eras is especially worthwhile for art and culture lovers: the entrance to several of Leipzig’s museums is free for WGT-guests. A special exhibition will present fantastic original artworks of HR Giger.

This year, the AMI (Auto Mobil International) will take place at the same time as Wave-Gotik-Treffen for the first time. Therefore, the Leipzig Trade Fair organises an exclusive special exhibition showing historical hearses, as well as a professional photo shooting.

The city of Leipzig and its’ inhabitants are extremely friendly, as well as familiar with the Festival and its’ visitors. Οver the last two decades - there are no longer any prejudices and the gothic guests are very welcome here. The most fascinating aspect of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen is surely its unique magic atmosphere that covers the whole city. More than 20.000 Goths from all over the world celebrate their gathering in a peacefully relaxed manner, turning Leipzig into a diverse wave of black.

Cheap and entertaining accommodation is available at the huge Treffen camping ground. To enter, you need a special ticket (called Obsorgekarte), which includes also the extensive WGT-program-book. Public transport in the city is free for all WGT-guests from Friday morning until noontime Tuesday.

For camping you need a special ticket called Obsorgekarte for 25,- € (including advance sale charge). It contains the following service-package:

WGT special tips
Apart from famous bands of the scene, the coming WGT program will again include several hidden treasures whose names are maybe not known to everybody, but which will surely perform great concerts. So before visiting the WGT, it’s worthwhile to take a closer look into the program and to listen to some sample tracks of the artists you don’t know. Here are some hints on a few less known, yet interesting bands and artists which will play at the WGT 2014:

Ambient, Experimental | UK /Poland
Interesting collaboration of the manic violinist Matt Howden (Sieben) with the Polish Dark Ambient masters of Job Karma, which will both also perform separate shows at the WGT.

Aeon Sable
Gothic Rock | Germany
New hope for fans of classical sounds by the Fields and the Sisters.

Post Rock, Shoegaze | France
Back again after their first live show at the WGT 2010, meanwhile much better known, also due to their comparatively catchy new album which was produced by Birgir Jón Birgisson (singer of Sigur Rós).

Gothic Rock, Post Punk | Australia
Young band from Melbourne in the tradition of Bauhaus, Joy Division and the Sisters.

Beck Sián
Folk | UK
The second cousin of Kate Bush (no joke!) presents fairy-like British “Ghost Folk”– even her voice is rather similar to that of her famous relative.

Cécile Corbel
Folk | France
Breton folk singer, who sings in several languages while playing the harp. She will perform twice, including one concert which will take place at the Pagan Village (Heidnisches Dorf).

Wave-Pop, Neofolk | Germany
This band was known in the past as “In My Rosary”.

Imaginary War
Synthpop, Indie | Germany
Young and skillful modern synth pop band for fans of IAMX or recent Depeche Mode.

Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat
Wave | Belgium
If you ignore the bizarre band name, you will get fine Wave Rock.

Industrial | UK
One of the last remained bands from the early phase of British Industrial of the 80ies with such contemporaries as Throbbing Gristle, Nurse With Wound, Whitehouse or Cabaret Voltaire.

Lebanon Hanover
Minimal, Wave | UK
The high-flyer of a booming genre.

Little Nemo
Cold Wave | France
One of the most important bands of the French “Cold Wave” or “Touching Pop” movement of the 80ies. Resurrected in 2008, now for the first time at the WGT.

Industrial | Germany
Young project for fans of November Növelet or similar stuff.

Oppenheimer MKII
Minimal Wave, Synthpop | UK
Cult band of the 80ies, known in the past as "Oppenheimer Analysis", active with the new name since the death of band member Martin Lloyd in April 2013.

Rainy Days Factory
Wave, Post Punk | Portugal
Fresh new band, whose idols must be Joy Division and The Cure.

The Bellwether Syndicate
Gothic Rock | USA
The new project of William Faith, founding member of Faith & The Muse.

The Devil And The Universe
Ghost Wave, Minimal, Dark Ambient | Austria
Obscure and interesting project with Ashley Dayour (Whispers In The Shadow), between modern Minimal Wave and occult Cold Meat sound, impressive live appearance with cowls and sleeping masks..

The Lost Rivers
Shoegaze, Noise Rock | Germany
The dark offspring of The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth.

The Marionettes
Gothic Rock | UK
Resurrected Goth Rock band from the 90ies.

Revolutionary Army Of The Infant Jesus
Neofolk, Neo Classical, Experimental | UK
The return of an obscure band from Liverpool with an affection to Christian mysticism. Published 3 albums in the 80ies and 90ies and was at that time often compared to Current 93 and Dead Can Dance.

Industrial | Sweden
Relatively young project with considerable cult status among connoisseurs. Pitch-black Death-Industrial in the manner of Brighter Death Now or Mental Destruction.

Verdiana Raw
Neoklassik, Dark Wave | Italy
Dreamy and at times slightly weird sounds of a classically educated singer and pianist, accompanied by guitar and percussion – somewhere between Tori Amos and Diamanda Galás.

Exclusive Interview Ronny Moorings (Clan of Xymox)

Ronny Moorings, front man of the notorious band the Clan of Xymox was kind enough to answer a few of our questions, here at the, just a few days before his visit to Athens as a guest Dj to the 'Sin City' Club.

Electrowelt: Hello Ronny, this is Lucian and I'm so glad to be the person to interview the frontman of Clan of Xymox on behalf of the music magazine..

- Ronny Moorings: Hello

Electrowelt: So please tell us, in the early 80's, when Clan of Xymox were younger, did you have at the time any idea of what you will find yourself achieving in the years to come ?

- Ronny Moorings : No, absolutely not. I was just making music with the idea it would be one album only.
I did not look ahead. I was studying Sociology at the University and thought never of myself becoming or being a musician. I was always busy with music, so a surprise it was not either ;))

Electrowelt: Can you give your fans in Greece a clue of how Clan of Xymox came into being?

- Ronny Moorings: It started off as a project of mine. I recorded a mini album on my own with a few synths , guitar and a 4 track recorder. It was a kind of minimalistic album and it caused Clan Of Xymox to be signed by a record label and enabled the then formed live band to record in a professional studio in Scotland and London  and released many more albums worldwide in the years to come.

I can be elaborate about it but that would be too much, you better look at our bio section

if you really want to know more :)

Electrowelt: Please tell us what are the main music projects and artists that influenced you in order to finally make your own music?

- Ronny Moorings: I started being interested in music when I was about three years old.
I grew up with the Beatles and the Stones and never stopped listening to music since then . I think I was born with a passion for music and is still alive and kicking. I played a lot in local bands , DJ ed at local parties , later when I studied I worked in music clubs as a past time , kept on ( also radio) DJ ing and making music.

Electrowelt: There has been a change in the project when the Xymox became Clan of Xymox and vice versa. I understand this might be a long story to rundown, but could you please tell us what was the main change?

- Ronny Moorings : it was a directional taste , so basically you can say Xymox was a bit more commercial or dance experimental in that direction then Clan Of Xymox which is a more consistent direction, the darker side, a more timeless direction.

Electrowelt: You have been an active musician for about 30 years …

What are the differences in the underground scene of Europe during those years if there are any?

- Ronny Moorings : In the 80's it was main stream at a certain point with bands like Depeche Mode and the Cure being in the charts and...they still are..once in a while

Yes, the rest is more underground now, but that can change again. I have seen in Germany the first signs already..

Electrowelt: Your music has mainly been ''gothic'' but we often listen to more electro songs from you… Is this a specific preference of yours or just nothing in particular ?

- Ronny Moorings: I like not to be bound by one or the other style , so I have many directions.
I don't really care which it is as long as the sound and feeling of the song is good it works for me .

I started off with using a lot of synths in the beginning and I still do. I play guitar and keyboard so it is easy for me to use both :)

Electrowelt: It is my belief that your latest album, called ''In love we Trust'' was absolutely fabulous!

Could you please compare this release to your older material, like the ''Medusa'' for example?

- Ronny Moorings: There is no
comparison if you ask me those were different times with a different set of eyes looking at things in a different way than I do now. The aim of music and the musician is to evolve and that is what I did. In Love We Trust is my current taste and style and of course I like it when I hear people pick up on this album :)

Electrowelt: Besides being on stage with the Clan of Xymox, do you ever make appearances as a DJ from time to time?

Could you please tell us about that?

- Ronny Moorings: Yes, from time to time I accept an invitation to DJ and I gladly do that because it is a different aspect of being busy with music.

I can play the music I think people like and are also in my range of taste.

The last DJ appearance was in Lisbon and now in Athens which I really look forward to.

Electrowelt: Clan of Xymox is considered one of the most influential gothic bands of the last years... Do you have an opinion on that?

- Ronny Moorings: I cannot comment on such compliments ;) It is great to hear people say and think that. I know a lot of bands do cover versions or want to have a remix or guest appearances and so forth, all very flattering ...

Electrowelt : Are there any particular songs you always enjoy to perform live in your concerts ?

- Ronny Moorings: Yes, those are always the newest ones, just because we did not play them that often ;) it is simply the most exiting from a musicians point of view ;)

Electrowelt: What about the female song titles you have for many songs? Do they refer to particular people?

- Ronny Moorings: All the names are fictitious. I do not really know people with those names when I wrote the song. I have certain characters in mind of course but in many cases the names I chose just sing better.

Electrowelt: Well in the future, should we expect from you a release in the steps of ''In love we Trust'' or something that would be rather closer to your old work?

Ronny Moorings: I really have no idea. I just write and see what comes out, so I let myself just guide by my feelings inside. That is the only way you get a honest result.

Electrowelt: Are there any plans for an upcoming concert in Greece we should expect? :)

- Ronny Moorings: We just played in Athens ( October 2009 ) so I guess not. If you ask me I could play always in Athens but that is of course not up to me ;)

Electrowelt: Dear Ronny, thank you very much for your time and the lovely interview. It is always a great pleasure for me and we'll be happy to see you in Athens on June. :D

- Ronny Moorings: Great, thanks :) see you soon!

The new album "Military Industrial Complex" of Dutch rhythmnic noise/doomcore acts The Peoples Republic of Europe has just been released on their new label Dark.Descent. The album is available as download through bandcamp, and soon on Itunes, Emusic, Beatport and Juno Download. Together with the album they also released a single on their own label New darkness Recordings with a radio edit of the album's title track and two b-sides as a free download.

On "Military Industrial Complex" TPROE delves further in the realms on rhythmnic noise and the crossover style between rhythmnic noise and industrial hardcore dubbed "Doomcore". Together with the already known critical and nihilistic political views of The Peoples Republic of Europe the new album makes up for an explosive cocktail of harsh dancefloor anthems, brooding soundscapes and experimental progressive industrial tracks.
