Exclusive Interview with SOMAN

                    By Lucian.

ElectroWelt: Hello,I am really glad to be the one from ElectroWelt team to make this interview.
Please tell us,who's the man behind SOMAN? How you came to be one of the leading projects of the alternative electronic scene?

The man behind Soman is Kolja Trelle, I´m a sound and mastering engineer, remixer and musician, who happened to fall in love with the combination of Industrial and Club Music ;-)  Soman originally started when I was DJing in a local club and found it hard to find the music I´d love to dance to myself. So I  recorded some tracks in my studio and the people seemed to like it. By that time I went on tour with Hocico as their Live Sound Engineer and used my tracks for checking the PA - one day, André from Out Of Line heard it and asked me if I wanted to release an album. That´s how it started, basically. Soman got a fairly decent exposure when I toured with VNV five years ago, so that pushed  me a little further and now here I am ;-)

ElectroWelt: What about the music you perform? What genre would you consider it to be?

That´s really hard to tell - I´ve been labeled "TBM", but honestly, I´m not that happy with it. My tracks are going beyond simply combining "EBM" and "Techno" - plus that sounds like a pretty retarded combination nowadays ;-) Maybe my genre will still have to be labelled - proposals, anyone?

ElectroWelt: Please could you give us a clue of your music tastes? Your inspirations and influences?

I started with Old School EBM á la Nitzer Ebb and Front 242, but I also listened to Belgian Industrial from Hypnoskull, Monolith, etc. At the moment, I like Glitch, Fidget, Minimal etc.- all the stuff with a fresh sound, basically ;-)

ElectroWelt: What about composing music? What's your proccess and main goal when composing something new?

It always starts with playing around with a source of inspiration.  That might be a sound, a loop, a sample, anything... As soon as I´ve put together a working combination of arrangement elements, I try to record a rough arrangement and continue from there on until everything´s fine. My main goal is to get something new, powerful,  something that catches me - and that I´d like to perform on stage or spin in a club.

ElectroWelt: Could you tell us about the themes of your songs? What they are mainly about?

Well, the themes are most of the time provided by the main sample in the song, sometimes by the lyrics written by another artist. The main theme very often is a strange tweak or twist of the human psyche...

ElectroWelt: You started in 2003 as SOMAN,however you've been part of the alternative electronic scene before it.
Tell us,how things were back then? I bet they weren't like the present time..

Honestly, these weren´t the "good old days" for a multitude of reasons. The main disadvantage were the limited production tools - it was impossible to deliver standard music industry quality without investing thousands of  Euros, and that did not happen in the musical underground. So everything sounded a bit cheap in comparison to today´s productions. But strange enough, this limitation also was an advantage, because everyone had to know his equipment by heart to get the most out of it, leading to quite surprising results. A major difference was that you were composing, recording and releasing cds to sell them - nowadays, releases are only promotional tools to book tours, where the major income is not the fee, but the merchandise. In that sense, musical content was more important than image...

ElectroWelt: My favourite from SOMAN is ''Ruler''. What about you? Your favourite one from SOMAN? Every artist has his own favourite right?

Hmm, I have this track "Side Chain" on the new album that I definitely like better than Ruler - but it´s always hard to tell, as I tend to liking my last tracks best ;-)

ElectroWelt: You have been to Greece some years ago.Remember anything nice? Memories?

Hmmm, the nice things are too numerous to mention - but the hospitality, the enthusiasm and the parties in Greece are really exceptional :-)

ElectroWelt: You have performed in WGT and in other big concerts & festivals! Anything good to share? Other bands? Performers?

We are trying to get Soman back onto some bigger festivals next year - keep your fingers crossed!

I´ve found that the best show doesn´t necessarily need a big stage - it might also happen in a small club...

Apart from that, I can recommend the Chemical Brothers, Richie Hawtin, Stefan Bodzin, Klangstabil...

ElectroWelt: What about djing? I guess you have things to tell us.

Well, yeah, this time, we´re setting up a small dj tour to promote the new album, so I´ll be spinning quite a lot between the end of November and the end of January. That´s something I´m definitely looking forward to ;-)

ElectroWelt: You are a music producer? Your everyday life must be full of music, latest News from the electronic scene and who knows what else! Please tell us about it.

My life is full of music, that is true :-) Every day, I´m either composing, remixing, mixing or mastering - or communicating to keep the studio running. To hear the latest gossip, I definitely have to leave the studio - so doing shows, tours or festivals covers that part :-)

ElectroWelt: What about your future plans? Working on something new? Or any upcoming shows?

Well, my plan is to avoid another big gap between the new album and the following release, so I´m already collecting ideas etc. to be prepared. In cooperation with my bookers at Neuwerk, we´re trying to get some festivals next year, and hopefully some shows around Europe.

ElectroWelt: We can't wait to have you back on Saturday 16/10 here in Athens!

Well, I´m really, really looking forward to be back in Athens - see you there ;-)
